KLMBGC Intramural Basketball Program

We can expect about 60 players in the league. The league will consist of 2 divisions, Juniors (10-12 yrs) and Seniors (13-16 yrs). Players will be assigned to a division based on their age on 1 July 2012.

For those players who still need to register, the next registration is 6:30-8 PM, Tuesday, 17 January at Kettering MS. ALL PLAYERS MUST BE REGISTERED TO RECEIVE A UNIFORM AND PLAY. Contact me immediately with any issues involving registration. The cost is $105.00.

ABOUT THE SEASON:
Practices will begin on Saturday, 21 January at Ernest Just Middle School. I will be contacting coaches during the week to provide the practice times. All teams will have 2 hours of practice per week before the regular season starts, 1 hour per week during the season. If more gym time becomes available, I will schedule more practices. Please be flexible. Equipment will be issued at practices. Each team will receive two balls, a whistle, a scorebook, and a bag. Please have your own balls to conduct your practice just in case.

Every player will receive a uniform before the beginning of the season. The registration fee does not cover the purchase price of uniforms. They are the property of Kettering-Largo-Mitchellville Boys and Girls Club and must be returned at the end of the season. Inform your parents that during post season the players will need an extra set of clothing. I will collect the uniforms immediately after a loss. COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT ALL UNIFORMS ARE COLLECTED!!!

Each team will play 10 games starting on Saturday, 11 Feb. ALL games will be played on Saturdays and Sundays. ALL teams will play both days during the regular season and receive at least a 1 hour practice during the weekend following the games. The post-season will begin on Saturday, 17 March. As always, EVERY TEAM will participate in the post season. The play-offs are double elimination for both divisions. The championship games (JR and SR) will be held on Saturday, 24 March.

The Intramural All Star Game will be held on Sunday, 25 March. JR Division teams may each select two (2) 10 and under players and two (2) 12 and under players for a total of four (4) per team. SR Division teams may each select four (4) players. The coaches for the All Star Games are selected at random. All-Stars receive an “ALL STAR” t-shirt before the game. The KLMBGC Basketball Program All Star Game in which the Intramural All-Stars compete against the County All-Stars will be played in early April.

To continue our league tradition, Sunday games and practices will not be scheduled to start before 1PM unless it is absolutely necessary. This is to ensure that everyone in the league has an opportunity to attend church services.

I will try to end games and practices as early as possible on February 5, Super Bowl Sunday. Also, I expect EVERY coach to take time out on Valentine’s Day to honor your wife or sweetheart. THAT’S AN ORDER! (SMILE).

COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING CONTROL OF THEIR PLAYERS, FAMILY MEMBERS, AND GUESTS DURING PRACTICE AND GAMES!
• Take steps to insure that everyone associated with the intramural
program is in the gym before your practice or game and remains
there.
• Make sure the gym is clean before you leave the gym.
• If you encounter someone outside the gym who refuses to enter or
observe any damage to school property notify me, Channon, the
custodian, or turn-key.
• The last team to use the gym for the day MUST conduct an inventory
and check-out with the custodian or turn-key.
• Be considerate of teams that precede and follow you in the gyms.
Ensure that your players are not entering the court, dribbling balls
or making excessive noise when another team is using the court,
especially the mini-mix teams. Failure to clean up after practices
and games will result in technical fouls during the next game.

When the schools are closed, the gyms are also closed and not available for use. In the past, school closings on Friday due to inclement weather; result in the gyms being closed for that weekend. During inclement weather on the weekends, the Prince George’s County Sports Office makes the determination on the availability of gyms. I will contact the sports office and notify coaches of the determination as soon as possible. Coaches will make positive contact with me during these situations before you and your team venture to the gyms. Tell parents to be patient and flexible. I will make every effort to make up practices and games that are canceled due to weather.

Teenagers who want to earn community serve credit can do so by serving as assistant coaches, team managers, game clock keepers, and statisticians. I encourage all coaches to involve young men and women in community service. At the end of the season, I will ask for the number of community service hours earned for those who work with your team. I will keep records for those you serve as game officials.

OTHER EVENTS:
Pictures. . Team and individual pictures will be taken as soon as possible after the issuing of uniforms. The time and place will be provided on a separate schedule. The picture packages usually costs $15.00 – $25.00. PICTURES MUST BE PAID FOR AT THE TIME THEY ARE TAKEN. Pictures will be returned by mail directly from the photographer approximately 3 weeks after they are taken.

Verizon Center games. Unfortunately, we will not have the opportunity to play games at the Verizon Center this season. We are looking for another league outing.

The Banquet. The banquet will be held on Friday, 30 March at 7PM. During the banquet, several events occur. Players receive trophies, players who maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or above during the season are recognized as well as those who display outstanding citizenship by their involvement in the community. Additionally, I want to continue the tradition of presentation of flowers and a plaque to the Team Mom by the coach. I normally rely on the teams to determine who should be recognized for honor roll and citizenship. In the past, many have made up a form that the players take around to their teachers to get their grades a week or so before the banquet. Similarly, the selection as a good citizen is based on information gathered by the coach and Team Mom/Dad. This is a SEMI-FORMAL affair. I expect all young men to be dressed in jacket and tie and young ladies to be dressed in evening attire. The cost of the banquet is approximately $18.00 per person. Children under 3 are free. This year, trophies are being provided by the club. Money for the banquet and trophies will be collected by my wife from the Team Moms/Dads during games on 10 and 11 March.

PARTING SHOTS:
Every team MUST have a Team Mom or Dad. They are absolutely essential to your success as a coach. Rely on them to handle all of the administrative duties such as pictures, equipment and uniform records, the banquet and trophies, money collections, etc. The Team Mom or Dad is a lifesaver that will make the coach’s job much easier!

Coaches and Parents, Please plan for all of the money that will be required for the various events.

Remember Coaches:
Your primary job as a coach in this league is to build character in young people through healthy team competition.

Every young person deserves a chance to benefit from the combination of your knowledge and experience and the excitement of the game.

It’s your team; they’re your players. They will become a reflection of you. Do your best to make sure that you are proud of what you see…both on and off the court.

Thanks and GOD BLESS!
